Abdul-Malik Kashie Yoba, otherwise known as his stage name, Malik Yoba, born September 17, 1967, is an American actor and occasional singer. He is well-known for his starring role in New York Undercover, and the role of Gavin in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? series. He portrays Vernon Turner on Fox's TV series, Empire.

Early life and career

Malik is the fourth of six children, Yoba was born in Bronx, New York; his parents are Mahmoudah Young and Abdullah Yoba. He is divorced from Trisha Mann, a model and actress who starred with Yoba in the stage play His Woman, His Wife in 2000. Yoba has three children: a son Josiah and a daughter Dena with Mann, and another daughter Pria from a previous relationship. Also, Yoba is an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
